Photo of Gavin SmythGAVIN SMYTH is a principal of Groia & Company Professional Corporation practicing commercial and securities litigation. Gavin’s securities litigation practice includes corporate crisis management and prevention through representing and advising public companies and their directors facing cross-border regulatory and criminal investigations and proceedings, and corporate governance challenges. He also represents individuals facing regulatory investigation or enforcement proceedings, and within shareholder and income trust unitholder class proceedings, shareholder disputes, and wrongful dismissal suits against investment firms. Gavin’s commercial litigation experience since his call to the Ontario Bar in 1999 includes oppression and inspector applications, director and officer liability matters, product liability actions, and breach of contract and collection matters.

Gavin has written on securities and civil litigation issues and spoken at securities litigation conferences presented by The Canadian Institute (Annual Advanced Forum on Securities Litigation) and Insight (Securities Litigation Forum). A recent article he co-authored with a U.S. attorney is entitled "Cross-Border Securities Enforcement: Issues Raised in Coordinating Defences."

Prior to joining Groia & Company in 2004, Gavin practiced with Lang Michener LLP in Toronto. Before this, Gavin was a clerk for one year to the Justices of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Here, Gavin had the opportunity to work alongside the judges of Ontario's highest court. Gavin received his B.A. (Hons.) in History and Politics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in 1994, and his LL.B. from the University of Windsor in 1997.
