He practices securities litigation, acting as counsel in a wide range of civil, quasi-criminal, criminal and administrative cases including broker claims and defences, defending OSC prosecutions and representing directors and officers in public companies.

In each of the last two years he has been listed by Lexpert as a leading practitioner in several practice areas - he was recognized as “most frequently recommended" in securities litigation, “consistently recommended" in commercial crime matters, and “repeatedly recommended" in both corporate-commercial and class action litigation in a survey of lawyers, corporate counsel and other professionals. He received his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1981.

In 1985 he joined the Ontario Securities Commission as the Associate General Counsel responsible for litigation matters. From 1987 until 1990 he was the O.S.C.’s Director of Enforcement. He then joined Heenan Blaikie’s Toronto office in September 1990 where he practised corporate and securities litigation as a partner until he left to start up Groia & Company on January 1, 2000. He has been a frequent speaker at the Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Bar Association, National Institute of Trial Advocacy and many other continuing education programmes. He has also presented securities and corporate law papers at the McGill University Meredith Lectures, the Peat Marwick Memorial Lectures, the Law Society of Upper Canada Special Lectures, the Langdon Hall Securities Law Practitioners' Programme and the Oxford Conference on International Securities Fraud.
